Julia Cohen

Julia Cohen (born March 23, 1989, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American right-handed tennis player who resides in Weston, Florida.

Cohen began playing tennis at age 6, encouraged by her dad, a practicing physiologist who had been a top-ranked junior. She had a national ranking in the girls’ 16s and 18s at age 11.

In 1998 Cohen won the Little Mo Nationals, was the girls’ 10 champion at the Florida State Closed, and at age 9 was the youngest player in the girls’ 12 draw at the Orange Bowl, where she advanced to the round of 32.

In 1999 she won the girls’ 10 singles titles at the Little Mo Nationals, the Florida State Closed, and the Little Mo Regionals. She advanced to the girls’ 12 singles semifinals at the Spring Fling.

In 2000, at the age of 11, Cohen won the girls’ 12 singles titles at the Port Washington National Tournament and the Gator Bowl, won the doubles title (with Alexa Glatch) and reached the singles quarterfinals at the girls’ 12 USTA Super National Hard Court Championships, finished runner-up in singles at the girls’ 12 Spring Fling, reached the girls’ 14 singles semifinals at the USTA Super National Winter Championships, and advanced to the doubles semifinals (with Glatch) and the singles quarterfinals at the girls’ 12 USTA National Clay Court Championships.

In 2001, during which she was ranked # 1 in the USTA 12s and # 15 in the USTA 14s, she won the girls’ 12 singles titles at the USTA Super National Clay Court Championships, the USTA Super National Hard Court Championships, and the USTA Super National Spring Championships – The Easter Bowl, won the girls’ 14 singles title at the Junior Spring Fling, finished runner-up in singles at the girls’ 14 USTA Super National Winter Championships, advanced to the girls’ 12 singles final and reached the mixed doubles semifinals (with older brother Josh) at the Eddie Herr International, and was a girls’ 16 singles finalist at the Florida Designated.

In 2002, during which she was ranked # 1 in the USTA 12s and 14s, and # 92 in the ITF World Junior Rankings at age 13, Cohen won the girls’ 14 singles title at Gamma and the girls’ 18 singles title at the USTA National Open Championships, finished runner-up in doubles (with Katrina Tsang) at the USTA Junior International Hard Court Championships, finished in 3rd place in singles at the USTA Super National Clay Court Championships, and was a singles and doubles finalist (with Gambale) at the Team Leschly Danish Junior Cup.

In 2003, during which she was ranked # 3 in the USTA 14s and # 23 in the USTA 18s, and # 11 in the ITF World Junior Rankings, she won the singles titles at the Condor de Plata Tournament and the Carlos Gabriel de Figueiredo Cup, finished runner-up in singles at the Pony Malta Cup, and advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the girls’ 18 USTA Super National Clay Court Championships.

In 2004, during which she was ranked # 6 in the ITF World Junior Rankings at age 15, Cohen won the singles title and reached the doubles semifinals (with Krysty Marcio) at the International Casablanca Junior Cup, finished runner-up in singles at the Pony Malta Cup, advanced to the singles semifinals at the USTA National Clay Court Championships, was a doubles semifinalist (with Gambale) at the Eddie Herr International, the Kentucky International Junior Tennis Derby, and the Astrid Bowl Charleroi Belgian International Junior Championships, advanced to the doubles semifinals (with Joanna Matuszczyk) at the Yucatan Cup, and reached the singles and doubles (with Megan Falcon) semifinals at the Coffee Bowl.

In 2004 Cohen also won the singles title at the $10,000 ITF event in Mexico City.

In 2005, during which she was ranked # 15 in the USTA 18s and # 21 in the ITF World Junior Rankings, she finished runner-up in singles at the Chanda Rubin Pan American Closed Championships, was a doubles finalist (with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova) at the Kentucky International Junior Tennis Derby, and reached the singles quarterfinals at the USTA International Spring Championships.

In 2005 she also reached the quarterfinals at the $10,000 USTA event in [Fort Worth, Texas]]. Also, as a qualifier, she advanced to the final of the $10,000 ITF event in Toluca, Mexico.

In 2006, during which she was ranked # 7 in the ITF World Junior Rankings at age 17, Cohen and won the singles title at the Copa Graiman, reached the doubles quarterfinals (with Kimberly Couts) at The Junior Championships at Wimbledon, and was a doubles quarterfinalist (with Gambale) at the girls’ 18 USTA National Championships.

In 2006 Cohen also qualified into the $25,000 ITF event in Mexico City, and advanced to the quarterfinals.

In 2007 Cohen swept the singles and doubles titles (with Valeria Pulido Valesco) at the Grade A International Casablanca Junior Cup.
