Juelsminde municipality

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Juelsminde municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Vejle County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in central Denmark. The municipality includes the island of Hjarnø, and covers an area of 240 km². It has a total population of 15,555 (2005). Its mayor is Peter Schmidt Hansen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Juelsminde.

The municipality is located on a headland, and is thus surrounded by water on three sides. Neighboring municipalities with land connection are Horsens to the north and Hedensted to the west.

To the north is Horsens Fjord, which separates Juelsminde from municipal neighbors Gedved and Odder. To the northeast is Glud Håb and two islands in Horsens Fjord— the municipality's island of Hjarnø and Odder's island of Alrø. To the east are Ås Cove (Ås Vig) and Sandbjerg Cove (Sandbjerg Vig), and beyond them the Kattegat. To the south is Vejle Fjord, which separates Juelsminde from municipal neighbors Børkop municipality and Fredericia.

Ferry service connects the municipality at the town of Snaptun east to the island of Hjarnø, southwest over the Kattegat to the town of Endelave By on the island of Endelave, and west on Horsens Fjord to the city of Horsens.

By January 1, 2007 Juelsminde municipality will, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007), be merged with Hedensted municipality and most of Tørring-Uldum municipality to form a new Hedensted municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 565 km² and a total population of 56,508 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").

A portion of Tørring-Uldum will be split off and merged into the new Vejle municipality.
