From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Judith Zaffirini (born February 13, 1946)[1] is a Democratic member of the Texas Senate representing the 21st District. As of January 9, 2007, Judith Zaffirini is the second in seniority in the 31-member Texas Senate where she has served for 20 years.

Since her initial primary victory in 1986 over state Representative William N. “Billy” Hall of Laredo, Senator Zaffirini has continued to defeat challengers in her Webb County-based district. Also of note, in 1996, she defeated a future state Senate colleague when they were in the same district, Republican Jeff Wentworth of San Antonio (who now serves for the 25th District). Zaffirini served briefly as acting governor of Texas in 1997.
