Judge Jules
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Judge Jules is a British dance music DJ. Born on October 26, 1965 as Julius O'Riordan, he was educated at University College School and the London School of Economics. He studied law at the LSE, giving rise to his stage name "Judge Jules", though he obtained a lower second class honours in his degree. Jules began his music career as a DJ on the then pirate radio station Kiss FM before he joined BBC Radio 1 in 1997, where he now has a regular Saturday night slot. He also has an internationally-syndicated radio show called "The Global Warm Up" www.somethinelse.com which can be heard across the USA, Russia, Europe and the Middle East. The Judge is well known for his witty one liners and eloquent speaking between tunes on his radio show.
Jules is renowned for his gaudy dress sense, particularly his loud and garish shirts and t-shirts, which he predominantly wears whilst DJing in clubs.
Jules' Radio 1 show, called The Saturday Warm Up is on air 7:00pm-9:00pm. It's extremely popular with clubbers and people preparing to go out on Saturday night. As well as Pete Tong's show it's one of the most listened to dance radio shows in the UK and also attracts listeners from around the world due to Radio 1's online internet connections and the Sirius Satellite Radio network out in the USA and Canada. His show attracts an audience well in the region of 1-2 million listeners.
Because of his DJing prowess and popular radio show he has achieved global success and in the last 10 years has never finished outside the top 20 in DJ Mag's "Top 100 DJ's" poll.
Jules is forever staying ahead of the game, recently entering the digital download market with the launch of his new MP3 store www.judgemusic.net
He also works as a producer under the name Hi-Gate with Paul Masterson, and recently as a solo producer under his own DJ name, Judge Jules. He lives in Highgate, North London and is married to Amanda, who provides vocals for the group Angelic with Jules & Darren Tate. They have a son, Jake, and daughter, Phoebe.
Judge Jules is responsible for launching many huge trance tunes and acts in the UK through his show, and is a pioneer for commercial contemporary dance music.
Judge Jules has a regular club night in Ibiza at the club Eden called Judgement Sundays, advertised as "San Antonios busiest night". The night runs for the entire summer season, starting in June until mid September and as well as DJing at this night he also promotes it. Because of the work involved, Jules has a second home in Ibiza , he used to own a share in the restaurant Kazbah on the island but has since sold his interest in this.
Judge Jules has also made a couple of TV appearances. Firstly the BBC's Top Gear Show, in the 1990s, road testing In-Car Entertainment (ICE) systems. He gave a short interview on Channel 4's The 11 O'Clock Show and featured on the Richard and Judy Show with his counterpart Paul Masterson and singer/DJ Boy George promoting their Hi-Gate album, on which Boy George made a cameo singing contribution.
A moody looking Judge Jules also appeared on the BBC's Top Of The Pops show with Paul Masterson, to perform the single Pitching, off their album Hi-Gate. Jules has released a new solo album in the states called Proven Worldwide. This album has now been released in the UK .
A lifelong and passionate follower of football he supports Arsenal FC and was asked to remix the English Premier League's official anthem in 2005. His uncle is chef Rick Stein.
He writes a near-weekly blog on his website www.judgejules.net that provides an insight into his life travelling around the world gigging. It also provides a personal insight into how he manages to juggle a busy professional DJ career and a wife and family. Jules answers every email sent to him via this website no matter how large or small a matter. Through both these mediums, Judge Jules comes across as a empathetic, focussed and amusing person.
