Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco (1650- June 29, 1725) Grandee of Spain, Marquis of Villena, and Duke of Escalona was Viceroy and captain general of the kingdoms of Navarre, Aragón, Catalunya, Sicily y Naples. He was awarded the title of Gentleman of Order of the Golden Fleece.

Founder of the Royal Spanish Academy or Real Academia Española (RAE), upon orders of King Phillip V. He was elected provisional director on August 3, 1713, he helped organize the Academy and launch work on firts dictionary. He became first Director, October 3, 1713 till his death on June 29, 1725. His son Mercurio Antonio López Pacheco was lifetime director of the RAE (1725-1746).
