Juan Manuel (Carrion, 1234 - Peñafiel, December 25, 1283, sometimes called only Manuel) was the son of Ferdinand III of Castile and his wife Elisabeth of Hohenstaufen. The name Manuel was given to him to commemorate his maternal grandmother's roots in Imperial Byzantium[citation needed]. He was Lord of Escalona, Peñafiel and Villena.
He married twice. His first wife, whom he married in 1260, was Constança of Aragon (1239-1269), daughter of James I of Aragon. Two children were born of this marriage:
- Alfonso (1260-1276)
- Violante Manuel (1265-1314), lady of Elche and Medellin. Married in 1287 Affonso of Portugal, son of Alfonso III of Portugal.
His second marriage, in 1274, was to Beatrice of Savoy (d 23 February 1292), daughter of Amadeus IV of Savoy. Three children were born of this marriage:
- Juan Manuel (1282-1348), Duke of Penafiel.
- Constanza
- Sancho Manuel (1283- after 1320), Lord of Infantado and Carrion. Married Beatriz de Castañeda and had issue.
