[edit] History
While other Catholic schools existed in the Salt Lake Valley prior to the establishment of Juan Diego, these served markedly different areas. Judge Memorial Catholic High School, founded in 1927, was located within downtown Salt Lake City, and was inaccessible to students in much of the surrounding, suburban area. St. Joseph Catholic High School was located nearly an hour north in Ogden. Seeing a need to serve a broader group of students, Bishop George Niederauer used a generous gift from Sam Skaggs to create a Catholic school complex in Draper, Utah. The school opened in August 1999 with 237 students in grades 9 and 10. Over time, the school would expand to fill all grades 9 through 12, and graduate numerous students. Juan Diego alumni have attended many prominent universities, including Harvard University, the University of Notre Dame, Colgate University, Duke University, Byrn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania.
