[edit] your category changes
Hi, I have reverted your changes to categories. I know you have good intentions, but categories don't work like that. Aromatic compounds are in the category aromatics, and alcohols are in the category alcohols. If a compound is both an aromatic compound, and an alcohol, they come into both categories. Otherwise we would get into trouble with compounds with several functional groups. Hope this clarifies. See you around! --Dirk Beetstra T C 19:43, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- (copied from user talk:Beetstra) What's wrong with puting aromatic alcohols into one category? It's to point out that there are some aromatic compound with hydroxyl group, that definitly aren't phenols - just like Benzyl alcohol. It's an exception kind of exception and it's quite confusing to some people. I wasn't planning to add anymore categories of this type.
- If can't we have aromatic alcohols, should we put aromatic amines and others into aromatic compund category??? JRS.pl 20:14, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hi. I just reviewed your changes, and there is a good point in your addition. But there was a bit of controversy about the alcohols (I see you already posted on wikiproject:chemistry in that subject). What happened was that I saw the category-changes yesterday, and I knew about the discussion about alcohols, but did not see that this was a chosen solution (and still is not). I'm sorry if I reacted too quick.
- When I reviewed your category-changes, I saw that you added the category:aromatic alcohols, while the compounds were before in category:alcohols and category:aromatic compounds. You did not remove the category aromatic compounds, but changed the alcohols category. That 'disrupts' the category system (though nothing fatal), in short, aromatic alcohols are caught by the two categories, or, if there are enough of them, they could indeed be combined in the new category aromatic alcohols, but then both category alcohols and aromatic compounds should be removed on the compounds.
- In general it is better to first discuss these changes on an appropriate wikiproject (in this case, wikipedia:Wikiproject chemicals is probably the best choice, though wikipedia:WikiProject chemistry would also be OK). Seen there are enough aromatic alcohols in wikipedia (probably more than aromatic amines), I believe that this is a good change.
- Hope this helps, again sorry for the quick reaction, keep up the good work, and happy editing! --Dirk Beetstra T C 10:19, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
