Joya

Joya (full name: Joya Owens; born 1973 in Detroit) is an R&B singer who released her debut album Here I Am on June 20, 1995 on the Polygram/A&M record label. Her debut single was "I Like What You're Doing To Me" is described as having an R&B feel with a touch of Hip Hop. It reached number 46 on the Billboard charts towards the end of 1995. Her second single "Gettin' Off On You", was released and hit number 67 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. The CD single was packaged with a condom, emphasizing the single's racy lyrics. Joya made appearances on Soul Train and BET, but the LP managed to sell a little more than 100,000 units in the U.S. according to Billboard Magazine. On September 25, 2001, she released her first album in over 6 years, titled Pages from the Book of Life: Chapter 1 on the independent label Caramel Park. The album sold less than 10,000 copies. Over the years Joya has worked with successful artists such as Monifah, Spice 1, Tragedy Khadafi, Lords of the Underground, & Mary J. Blige.
