Jelenic, was carrying $740 million in debt in 2006, largely as a result of its purchases.

The transformation of one JRC newspaper, The Trentonian, is documented in Tabloid From Hell, a book written by Michael Raffaele, a former executive editor and sports editor. It tells how the paper changed from featuring "a mix of hard-hitting news, steamy sex stories and solid sports" into an "irrelevant" tabloid.
