[edit] Ships by navy renames

Josh, could you please tag the categories which you have proposed for renaming? Thanks! TomTheHand 21:33, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Working on it presently, no problem! Josh 21:34, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Done. Josh 21:38, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Removing country categories

Josh, please don't remove "Ships by country" categories from ship articles. If you don't feel like ships should be categorized by country, please talk about it on WP:SHIPS. I just put many of those on there a couple of weeks ago. TomTheHand 16:57, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I haven't done that. What I have done is further categorize the vessels under their national category. If I have made a mistake and removed a ship from its country on accident by all means, please let me know and I will fix it. All ships should be categorized by country if at all possible. [edit] Deutsche Werft/Werke

Hello. You created Deutsche Werft, but I think it's a bit mixed up. Some of the info seems to to refer to Deutsche Werke Kiel (the old Kaiserliche Werft/Reichswerft until 1920-odd which was called the Kriegsmarinewerft between 1943 and 1945), and some to Deutsche Werft Hamburg yards, one new and opened by GHH, HAPAG et al in 1920 (at Finkenwärder ?) and the other the former Reiherstieg yard. Trying to keep track of the various Hamburg, Kiel and Bremen yards is a nightmare, and I'm still not quite sure I know what I'm talking about. The German wikipedia HDW article seems to agree with my version, I think. But I'm not quite certain ... Angus McLellan (Talk) 00:03, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

No I think you are right on this one though. I will double check some references to make sure, but if I don't see differently, I will assume you have the right idea. Thanks! Josh 00:18, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox Class

Hey Josh,

I noticed that you recently wrote Template:Infobox Class. It looks like a huge improvement over Template:Infobox Ship Class. I edited Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships/Tables#Table of statistics for a ship class to list it instead, and I was hoping you could look at it and make sure I listed all the paramenters. Also, if you wouldn't mind, could you occasionally look at that page to make sure that it stays up to date as you modify the template? I think it would be cool if we could all start using it, since it allows so much more detail. TomTheHand 15:34, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the listing, I will indeed make sure to update it there if I make any changes to the template. I tried to make it in the same mold as the Template:Infobox Ship so that people can comfortably use both without a new learning curve. I took a look and it looks like you got it right on in the listing. Thanks! Josh 15:45, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm having a small issue with the country flag portion of the template. It does not allow for a customizable image tag, so flags are always tagged "InsertAltTextHere" if you mouse over them (or have graphics disabled and only see text). I believe in most other ship templates you're able to input an entire Wikipedia image link, but in Infobox Class you're only able to give it a file name and it creates the image link. I'd suggest just using the same solution as other templates (take an entire image link), but if you'd like to approach the issue another way I understand. TomTheHand 15:53, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
Excellent point. I will probably do that and just take the whole image link, but I would like to see if there is a way to do it requiring less to be entered by the user. Thanks for the input! Josh 15:58, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
By placing the 'country' into the alternate text area, I think I may have fixed this problem. Please let me know if this satisfactorily addresses your concern. Thanks! Josh 16:04, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
What do you think about changing it to "Flag of (country)" instead of "(country) flag"? I think it sounds a little better (Flag of Japan vs. Japan flag), though cases where the country name is preceded by "the" are still a little awkward ("Flag of United States" and "Flag of Netherlands"). TomTheHand 18:01, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, the 'the' situations are what I was thinking of. Of course we could just remove the flag part...I mean it is a flag, the only question might be what country it belongs to, so just the country name might suffice. I think you are right that 'country flag' is a bit too akward, but I'll wait to change it for a bit and see if we can settle on something. Josh 22:21, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
Hi, Josh, I noticed you recent edit for the template infobox for the Ticonderoga class cruisers and was wondering if there was a way to incorprate the "ship namesake" tab back into the mix. I like having that particular tab because I feel that it helps people unfamilar with the subject matter to see immediately where the class gets its name from. TomStar81 (Talk) 05:41, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
A consideration... but nine times out of ten it is from the lead ship, and a discussion of the lead ship's name is really more appropriate on the individual ship's page in that case. In the few cases where the class name is not merely the lead ship's name, and where any elaboration is needed, just put it in the regular text of the article. In fact, even if you want to do something about the name Ticonderoga for example in the class article, it really makes more sense to put it in the text then the info box. I think it would make more sense to elaborate on the naming convention of the class (named after battles) than to talk only about Ticonderoga, since this is a class article and therefore should be about the class as a whole. Since naming conventions or rationale really is only meaningful with some elaboration, I don't think it lends itself well to the infobox format, and is really done better justice in the normal body of an article. Josh 06:22, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

I added a "sensors" box to the template. I think it will come in handy; I'm working through submarine articles right now and a lot of them would benefit from a place to list their sensors. TomTheHand 19:25, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

  • For some reason the new infobox is placing the ship prefix beside the pictuire while placing the ship name under it. Is there a way that you could maybe fix this? TomStar81 (Talk) 22:54, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:PKM machine gun.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:PKM machine gun.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chowbok 16:44, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Hudicourt 21:30, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, map is updated. Josh 22:30, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

I dont know if you just missed them or if you found I was mistaken, but above I had also listed Georgia, Kazakhstan and Latvia as IL-76 countries. Hudicourt 01:31, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Wrong version uploaded. But with Georgia, I haven't put it on because while the aircraft is registered there, it is operated by a Sudanese operator. This is where civil operations by country get a little hairy, I guess. Josh 23:31, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello Josh. I did some further research into IL-76 operators.

There is Reem Air from Kyrgyzstan http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1059215/M/

Also although I found that Jordan ordered 2 IL-76MF in late 2005, they have yet to be delivered, as far as I could find out anyway

Equatorial Cargo from Equatorial Guinea operates IL-76s http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1015117/M/

There might also be Central African Republic as well as Sao Tome and Principe but I have not yet found proof that they have flying IL-76s today

Hudicourt 08:32, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Il-76 operators section expanded and map updated. Thanks! Josh 06:57, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Fantastic work. Thanks. Hudicourt 17:02, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

I read in wiki Mirage 2000 article that upgrades are getting Bae ASRAAMs. You gave the source as AWST. i wanna more abt it, if you post some more info from that Mag as to what exactly did they say about. ASRAAM for Indian Mirage is surprise as It already has MICA & can have Python-5 & R-73s.--59.162.215.107 03:52, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Argentine_Air_Force

I dont think your source (BTW isnt visible) to be very accurate. Some examples: 0 Alouttes II (are Lamas), the A-4AR are 34, IAI Fingers (you didnt post it) are 15 , Pucaras at least 40, 707 are 2, Guarani 0, 212s 7, and go on. --Jor70 15:25, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Sounds like great info. Please update the appropriate numbers and make sure to note the source for those items. Josh 16:05, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
I dont think such detail is necessary, perhaps only the model without quantites Jor70 16:20, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
It is quite handy to know at least roughly the quantities involved to give some idea of the importance of various types. There is also a notes column to add additional details. Josh 16:24, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps a mention regarding stocked airframes particullary A-4AR Fightinghawks and Pucaras. - Jor70 17:04, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] World Rally Championship seasons

Hey. Great work on expanding these season articles and I like the images. I noticed you also replaced the result tables on 1981 World Rally Championship season with an "old-style" layout. The new layout, on 1981, 1984, 1986, 1987 and 2007, was implemented after this discussion and agreed on by all users, so I hope you can check that out and participate in the discussion if you disagree with the way it looks. Thanks, Prolog 15:21, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for the comment. Actually I tried to not change the format of the layout for 1981, but merely changed the header to fit it into the format of the rest of the page (table width and text size). I did make one minor change within the table and that was to add a break after the flag for the event, but I will note this in the discussion. Josh 15:35, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
