Joshua's Prayer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is the prayer that the Hebrew Bible character Joshua prayed to God while in battle against the Amorites . This is recorded in the 10th chapter of the book of Joshua in the Old Testament [1].
Joshua 10:12-14 (King James Version)
12 Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. 14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
Joshua's prayer is recorded in verse 12 above. Joshua prayed that the Sun would stand still to lengthen the day and increase the magnitude of the Hebrews' victory over the Amorites.
Verse 13 relates that the sun did indeed stand still for about a whole day. Such was the faith that Joshua had in the Lord.
Given the enormity of the miracle that follows from Joshua's prayer, it is one of the more powerful and extraordinary prayers recorded in the Hebrew Bible.
