Joseph Wells, who was originally an explosives lighterman on the River Thames in London, founded the Joseph Wells & Sons Firework Company in 1837. The company established a reputation for the manufacture and display of the finest quality fireworks. The ownership of Wells Fireworks has remained in the Dartford area of Kent, having been bought by a pyrotechnics company, Pyrojunkies Ltd.

The actual manufacture of Wells fireworks has now moved to Sussex, however, the remains of a number of buildings from the former factory can be seen in the Joyce Green area of Dartford. Sadly, due to development, these historic buildings face an uncertain future and an important part of English fireworks history may disappear forever.
