[edit] Bribery
In 1992, McDade was indicted on bribery charges. He was charged with racketeering and conspiracy after accepting gifts and trips in exchange for diverting government contracts to specific groups. He spent over $200,000 in campaign funds to defend himself against the charges.[4] Although he was acquitted after a seven-week trial in 1996,[5][6] the charges severely injured his image, causing him to lose the chairmanship of the House Appropriations Committee.[5] McDade retired from the House in 1999.
[edit] Indecent exposure
A Florida television station in February, 2007, reported that former Congressman Joseph McDade has been accused of exposing himself in public. Prosecutors in Florida charge that McDade exposed himself on Sanibel Island, Florida. The 76-year-old McDade has been ordered to appear in court.[7]
