Joseph Lerner

Joseph Lerner (Born 1972, in Tehran) is an Iranian-Canadian composer, conductor and motivational coach. He began his musical studies in violin at the age of 8 and in piano at the age of 11 in Tehran, Iran. Later on he joined the Iran's National Conservatory Chamber Orchestra as a violinist, and was soon thereafter appointed as the assistant conductor for the NTO.

Joseph Lerner has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards: The Masterplayers International Music Academy's Achievement Award, the Pickering Metro East Music Festival Achievement Award, the First Composition Award at the Kiwanis Music Festival for his Capriccio for Oboe. In addition, his Intermezzo for Piano and Capriccio for Oboe have been recorded at the Ettore Mazzoleni Concert Hall.

Joseph Lerner has been active as a journalist and promoter in the arts and entertainment industry. He has interviewed numerous high profile artists and celebrities such as Anton Kuerti, Gino Vanelli, Ann Medina, André Laplante, Jack Lenz, Glenn Morley, Pegah Anvarian and Barbara Braunohler among many others.

One of his most well known pieces is Capriccio for Viola recorded by Teng Li (Principal Violist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra) and Li Wang (Gold Medal winner of the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition and Chopin International Piano Competition).

Joseph Lerner has been premiered and recorded by the artists such as Mark Skazinetsky (Associate Concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra); Teng Li; Brian Hanke; Li Wang; Prof. Senya Trubashnik (over 100 solo recordings with Radio Luxembourg Symphony, EMI and Decca labels); Mahs Maddahian (soloist with Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, TVO, Armenian String Virtuosi).

Joseph Lerner studied violin with David Ganjei and piano with Farman Behbood and later with Novin Afrooz. He continued his studies with leading Iranian musicians such as Morteza Hannaneh, Heshmat Sanjari, Fereydoon Naseri, Novin Afrooz among many others.

Joseph Lerner attended the Glenn Gould Professional School of the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) for his professional studies. He perused his education in composition by taking masterclasses. Some of the musicians who assisted Joseph Lerner in shaping his professional musical education are Dr. Alexander Rapoport, Srul Irving Glick, Dr. Samuel Dolin, Glenn Morley, Gary Kulesha, Daryl Irvine, Maestro Richard Schumacher, Prof. Novin Afrouz.
