Joseph Carlino

Joseph Francis Carlino (June 23, 1917-August 13, 2006) was a Long Island Republican and former speaker of the New York State Assembly.

He was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City on June 23, 1917 to Lorenzo Carlino.

His father Lorenzo became the Republican leader of Long Island in 1937. Joseph's father then died in 1943, allowing Joseph to fill in his father's place. Joseph had recently graduated from Fordham University. In 1944 Carlino was elected himself into the Assembly. He became the majority leader in 1955 and became speaker in 1959.

Carlino's first wife, Joanne, who he had met in high school, died in 1988. His second wife, Amelia, died in 1994. His son, Joseph Jr., died in 1977.

Carlino suffered a stroke in 1998. He died August 13, 2006 at his home in Syosset, New York, at the age of 89.
