Joseph Abate

Joseph F. "Joey" Abate (1902-1994) was a New Jersey mobster involved in extortion, loansharking and illegal gambling as a caporegime for the Lucchese crime family. A former gunman for Al Capone during Prohibition, Abate headed Lucchese interests in New Jersey by the 1970s in command of over 100 mobsters. He was also involved in the induction of Anthony Accetturo into the Lucchese family in June 1976 who eventually succeeded him after going into semi-retirement in 1979.
