[edit] Football Career
During his career (1973–1988), he played for:
- 1973–1985: Clube Atlético Mineiro, where he scored 255 goals (the club record). Reinaldo averaged 1.55 goals per match in the 1977 season—scoring 28 goals in 18 matches—the record average in Brazilian League. The Mineiro supporters nicknamed Reinaldo The King.[citation needed]
- 1985: Palmeiras
- 1986: Rio Negro (AM)
- 1986: Cruzeiro,
- 1987: Hacken de Goteborg
- 1988: Stormvogels Telstar Team.
He won eight Campeonato Mineiro titles, including six consecutively, in 1976, 1978–1983 and 1985.
Reinaldo played 30 matches and scored 11 goals for the Brazilian national team between July 1975 and May 1985. During this period he played in the 1978 FIFA World Cup, where he scored one goal against Sweden. He also scored the goal that meant the Brazilian team qualified for the 1982 FIFA World Cup, but he was not included in the squad for the final tournament in Spain.
Reinaldo is still remembered by Atlético Mineiro supporters and received significant support from both the club and the fans when he faced prosecution for drug consumption in 1998.[citation needed] In 2004, he was elected in Belo Horizonte to represent Partido dos Trabalhadores.[citation needed]
