José Mujica

José Mujica (better known as Pepe Mujica), is an Uruguayan politician, and currently serves as the Minister of Agriculture of Uruguay.

Before becoming minister he was the President of the Uruguayan Senate briefly and a Senator for the Frente Amplio leftist coalition.

He was one of the leaders of the movement called Tupamaros, a group which took up arms in the 1960's and 1970's as one of the first urban guerrilla movements. After a military coup in 1973 Mujica was arrested and spent 13 years in military prisons, under inhumane conditions, until released in 1985 due to general ammnesty that was given by the Democratic government that started on March 1st, after several years of military dictatorship.

He married Lucia Topolansky in 2006, his partner from guerilla times, who is a Senator.
