Díaz was the hero of the September 22, 1866 battle of Curupaity. Díaz died in January 1867 when hit by a shell shot by a Brazilian ship while scouting a river on a canoe. Paraguay's highway Ruta 4 is named after him [1]. He appears on the 100 Guaraní coin.
