José Augusto Torres

José Augusto da Costa Séneca Torres (pron. IPA: [ʒu'zɛ 'toʁɨʃ]) (born Torres Novas, 8 September 1938) is a former Portuguese footballer and coach.

He played for SL Benfica from 1959/60 to 1970/71, and for Vitória Setúbal, since 1971/72. He finished his career, as player-manager of Estoril, aged 42. He was one the great names of Benfica and the Portuguese national football team of the 1960`s, like Eusébio, Mário Coluna and António Simões. He missed the Benfica team that was won the European Champions Cup twice, in 1961 and 1962, but played in the finals of 1963, 1965 and 1968.

He had 33 caps for the National Team, 31 of them as a Benfica player, scoring 14 goals. His debut was at 23 January 1963, in a 0-1 loss against Bulgaria, for the Euro 1964 qualifyings, and his last game, aged 35, was a 2-2 draw, again against Bulgaria, in 13 October 1973, for the 1974 FIFA World Cup qualification.

The peak of his career was as one the leading figures of the national team at the 1966 World Cup, in England, where he scored 3 goals. He scored the 2-1 winning goal over the USSR in the match for the 3rd place.

As a coach, his best result was the qualification for the 1986 World Cup, were Portugal was eliminated on the 1st round.
