The Jornal Nacional (Portuguese for National News) is the most influential news program in Brazil and is aired by Rede Globo since September 1, 1969. This program name was named commemorating the sponsor at that time, Banco Nacional.

The program has maintained the same format since it started: It commences with a brief résumé of all the important news that it is about to report. After this brief introduction, news pertaining to many subjects like politics, culture and sports are read by the hosts with a neutral point of view.

[edit] Controversy

However, Jornal Nacional's impartiality has been questioned numerous times by certain political parties and institutions. A particularly common complaint is that Jornal Nacional's edited version of the 1989 presidential debate was essential to Fernando Collor's victory over Lula.
