An Introduction to Professor Smith
Mike was born and raised in Miles City, Montana. He is a father, by design and an engineer by profession. Mike leads JMSA, a consulting firm in Galveston, Texas. He consults on Space Commercialization, The Space Shuttle program and on Communications Satellite Systems. His consulting is based on thirty two years of experience serving NASA's Shuttle and Communications Satellite and Earth Station Communications programs.
In addition to his interest in Space Commercialization, he is focused on finding ways to halt failures of small businesses in America. Mr. Smith's father, and grandfather before him, was all small businessmen. The family is devoted to the American tradition of independence and economic security for the family through quality business products and service to local communities. Much of his consulting is based on his experience as an Adjunct Professor of Business at the University of Mary Washington and his ties to the Harvard Business School.
Mike works most of the time. He is from the old school philosophy that work is life, and life must be practical. Working is a good habit of his generation. His leisure time is spent flying and writing. He owns a Pitts Special. He is a member of the Bay Area Aero Club. He flies the clubs S-Model Bonanza and 200R model Piper Arrow. The club flies out of Clover Field, a Houston airport. Mike writes books for John Wiley and Sons Publishers Inc. and McGraw Hill Publishers Inc.
Mike's training includes a Bachelors of Science degree in Physics, Seattle University, Seattle, Washington. He is a alumni of the Harvard Graduate School of Business's Advanced Management Program and a member of MIT's Sloan School's Management of Complex Organizations Program. Mike was chosen by NASA to attend these programs to develop insights into business practices that would be useful in NASA's space commercialization initiatives.
He has lots of energy and spirit. He enjoys teaching, business, engineering, mathematics and physics at undergraduate, graduate and professional levels. His purpose for living is contribution and teaching.
