[edit] Career
McGovern started on the Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York City stand-up scene, at the now-defunct performance space "Surf Reality". His career in stand-up comedy brought him wider acclaim after he recorded a single called "Soccer Practice," which found success on the US dance charts. This was followed by the release of his debut CD Dirty Gay Hits, for which he toured America and received some popularity (and MTV airplay) in Europe and Japan.
The video for "Soccer Practice", which received heavy rotation in dance clubs as well as notoriety on the internet, featured McGovern in a shirt that was emblazoned with the sequined words "Gay Pimp." In it, he cavorted and simulated sex with scantily clad men.
The success of the single put McGovern in the pseudo-mainstream, and he contributed commentary on a variety of VH1 shows (such as Best Week Ever) as well as a slot on Comedy Central's all-gay comedy show Out on the Edge[1], hosted by Alan Cumming. He also became a temporary ghetto celebrity when he took a year-long assignment as a correspondent on The Ricki Lake Show. A second single, "Lookin' Cute/Feelin' Cute," continued to endear him to his largest fan base of gay teenagers, despite missing the heavy exposure of "Soccer Practice."
McGovern himself is gay, and his live performances are almost exclusively at gay establishments or gay pride parades. Though he is known to a varied audience, his fan base is primarily gay. He has stated in print interviews that his character "Gay Pimp" was meant to be a lighthearted response to hyper-masculine heterosexuals and the seeming obsession of gay men with projecting a masculine image.
McGovern is also a party promoter in New York City, and has had several long-running gay parties such as "XXX," "Magnum," "The Rambles," and "Boys Gone Wild." 2006 saw the start of a weekly podcast, Gay Pimpin' with Jonny McGovern and the release of his album This is NYC, Bitch! The East Village Mixtape. Other projects include producing other gay music acts, such as "tranny rap super group" La'Mady. He will also be a cast member of the upcoming Logo sketch comedy show produced by Rosie O'Donnell called The Big Gay Sketch Show.
[edit] Podcast
McGovern hosts Gay Pimpin' with Jonny McGovern, a weekly free gay and lesbian themed podcast based out of New York City. The show began airing on January 16, 2006 and currently ranks the second highest in popularity under the keyword "gay" on the iTunes music store.

Note:
A low resolution version of the music video for Somethin' For The Fellas (That Like the Fellas) from the music website PromoOnly.com was leaked onto the web on dailymotion on March 17 before it's official release date. This was an unintentional leak, opposed to the intentional leaks done on McGovern's popular weekly podcast, and has since been removed. The video will officially be released when the Gays Gone Wild album premiers on Logo on April 1, 2007.
[edit] Merchandise
McGovern has ring tones of his music or music that he has produced available on his website. The store also offers appeal for both men and women in the form of shits, booty shorts, and at one time a Gay Pimp necklace. The bulk of them have been t-shirts with memorable lines or inside jokes from his weekly podcast like "Oops! My Cock's Out" or "Team Crummy."
