Jonathan de Guzmán (born on September 12, 1987 in Toronto, Canada) is a midfielder for Feyenoord Rotterdam of the Dutch Eredivisie.
The promising midfielder left Canada when he was 12 years old and joined the Feyenoord youth. He was not allowed to play for the first team before he was 18 years old. After his debut against SC Heerenveen he has become a key player quite quickly. Jonathan scored his first professional goal in the 9th minute against Willem II Tilburg on September 30, 2005. He is considered as a great prospect for the future. His squad number is 33.
He recently signed a contract extension with Feyenoord until 2010. His old contract was set to expire in 2008.
There is serious discussion whether de Guzman will play his international football for his birth country, Canada, or his adoptive one, the Netherlands. However, de Guzman is currently ineligible for the Dutch as he does not yet have Dutch citizenship.
His brother is Julián de Guzmán, who plays for the Canadian national team and Deportivo de la Coruna in Spain.
In the recent weeks, reports have speculated interest from Chelsea, saying that head Blue's scouts have gone several times to watch him play for Feyenoord. When asked about the interest he said that for him being a Canadian playing in England for a top Premiership team, would be like a second home.
