Jonathan Toews (pronunciation: [teıvz]) (born April 29, 1988, Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a collegiate ice hockey forward for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. He was selected third overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, by the Chicago Blackhawks and was ranked third on NHL Central Scouting’s Final Rankings.[1] As well, NCAA ranks him as tied for the number one prospect of 2006 with Phil Kessel.
- "Toews is the most complete player in the draft who can play all three zones on the ice well. A born leader."
1::- Bob McKenzie, TSN Hockey Insider
In 2003, Toews was the selected first overall in the WHL Bantam Draft after having been chosen by the Tri-City Americans, but chose instead to go the collegiate route. Toews played two years of prep school hockey at Shattuck-Saint Mary's. In his final season, 2004-05, Toews totalled 110 points (48 goals, 62 assists) in 64 games.
In 2005, he was captain of Canada’s Team Western at the World U-17 Tournament in Lethbridge, Alberta, capturing the gold as well as earning the tournament’s MVP honour. The following year, he played for Team Canada as a 17-year-old at the 2006 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
While playing for North Dakota for the 2005-06 season, Toews registered 39 points (22 goals, 17 assists) including nine power play goals. He also had the third best plus/minus on the team with +20.
Toews had a successful World Junior Ice Hockey Tournament in 2007, as he led Team Canada in scoring, and led the team to its 3rd straight Gold Medal. Toews had a superb game in the semi-finals against the United States, as he scored 3 goals in the shootout to help defeat the U.S. 2-1. For his efforts, he was named to the tournaments all-star team.
Jonathan Toews was honoured locally by hometown at the local American Hockey League Team (The Manitoba Moose) on Februrary 3rd, 2007 in front of over 8000 people. The first 2000 people in the building got a free photo of Jonathan. There was a video on the main score clock honoring him. Then he was presented with a Manitoba Moose team Canada jersey. He later signed autographs from the start of the first intermission to the middle of the third period.
