[edit] The Crime
Jonathan Lee Sellers (9) and his friend Charlie Keever were riding bikes near the banks of the Otay River when they were abucted. The boys were taken to a brush-enclosed "fort" where they were sexually assaulted and strangled with ropes. Their bodies were found two days later on March 29, 1993. The brutal murder sparked fear in the county and till this day remains one of the most horrific crimes in San Diego history.
[edit] Quest for the Killer
For nearly nine years the identity of Jonathan and Charlie's killer remained unknown. In 2001, DNA put a name to the killer; Scott Erskine. Erskine, a man with a long history of violent sexual assaults was already in prison, serving 70 years, for a rape and kidnapping he committed six months after the boys' murder.
[edit] Conviction
In 2003, Erskine was convicted for Jonathan's murder and the murder of his friend Charlie. The jury, however, did not agree on the sentencing. The judge declared a mistrial for the penalty phase and a new jury decided the punishment. In September 2004, Erskine was sent to deathrow in San Quentin State Prison.
