Schmitz killed Scott Amedure after a March 6, 1995, episode ("Same-Sex Secret Crushes") of the Jenny Jones talk show, in which Amedure indicated that he was sexually attracted to Schmitz. Schmitz, visibly shaken and embarrassed, stated that he was heterosexual and nervously laughed off the remarks.

Schmitz was convicted and is currently imprisoned in Thumb Correctional Facility in Lapeer, Michigan, with an earliest release date of July 1, 2017.
