• Jolly as a name shares the same meaning as the French name, Jolie. It might be derived from the Old French word, "joli" that means "merriness."compare to the dutch lollige(lohl-ihe).

• The name is quite popular as a unisex first name in Southern India where the French once visited and settled. It is also used as a result of the British presence.

• Jolly is the surname of a family of southern German scientists and politicians including Julius Jolly.

• Jolly a surname in the Punjab (India) is a corruption of the word Jalli. One definition of the word Jalli is almighty, another is the name of a tribe in the North West Frontier Province (now a part of Pakistan).
