Joint Services Command and Staff College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The creation of the Joint Services Command and Staff College was announced 14 July 1994 to replace the Staff College, Camberley, the Royal Naval Staff College, Greenwich, the RAF Staff College, Bracknell, and the Joint Service Defence College, Greenwich. It was based temporarily at Bracknell 1997 - 2000, and opened in August 2000 at Watchfield, near Shrivenham, the campus of the United Kingdom's Defence Academy.

The Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC) provides courses for serving military officers in mid-career. JSCSC has both single-service and joint elements. It covers policy, operations, command, and management. The junior staff courses run on a single service basis. The principal course (the Advanced Command and Staff Course) has recently been supplemented by a new Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) for newly promoted majors. They would complete this 32-week course, and return for the 42-week advanced course after one or two tours of duty.

JSCSC is under the command of a Commandant, a two-star appointment (major-general or equivalent). The current Commandant is Air Vice-Marshal Nigel Maddox. Former Commandants include Air Chief Marshal Brian Burridge, subsequently commander of Operation Telic. There is also a Deputy Commandant, a brigadier or equivalent. Each service had its own Assistant Commandant (Navy, Land, and Air).

There is a Dean of Academic Studies, initially Professor Geoffrey Till. Academic support comes from King's College London.
