Joint Light Tactical Vehicle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle is a program to provide the U.S. Army and Marine Corps with a family of more survivable vehicles and greater payload than the current HMMWV. In particular the HMMWV was not designed to be, but has been employed as an armoured combat and scout vehicle.

General Dynamics Land Systems and Oshkosh Truck have been selected create JLTV mock-ups and conceptual designs, along with Lockheed Martin's Lockheed FTTS and Navistar International Corporation's International FTTS utility vehicles which have been delivered for evaluation. Armor Holdings have also delivered an MSV (Maneuver Sustainability Vehicle) for evaluation.[1] The future family of vehicles will comprise five armored versions, ranging from infantry combat vehicles, command vehicles, reconnaissance, and armored utility vehicles.

There will be five "Mission Role" variants:

  • Combat Tactical
  • Command and Control
  • Utility
  • Light Infantry Squad Carrier
  • Reconnaissance Variant
  • Compatible trailers.

JLTV design will incorporate a standard armor protection package. The design will also accommodate add-on armor according to combat requirements.

Such a design could also be used in place of an armored personnel carrier or unarmoured trucks.
