    [edit] Hopping Back On IRC

I'd love to, and i'd be more than happy to collaborate on what to say there on the wikiphilosophies later on. The last thing I want to do is destroy Wikipedia, I love this place. I'm just way too honest for my own good and i've seen far too many people emotionally hurt by the inconsistencies of this place making me feel like I have to do something, if only sharing my perceptions of things and trying to muster support to fix it. Karmafist 16:01, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

BTW, later on not because I don't think rectifying all of that is important, but later on because I want to hit 3300 welcomes before I have to leave in about 40 minutes and I have to leave a note on my re-rfa to avoid a Swift Boat Veterans For Truth silence effect on my re-rfa. Misunderstanding sucks, and I hope I can do my part to reduce it in the world. Karmafist 16:04, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] Closing ArbCom cases

Hi John. Can you make absolutely certain, when you close ArbCom cases, that you remove "proposed" from the titles of the sections. You missed this out on Sortan. Cheers, Sam Korn (smoddy) 13:38, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Also, Jguk stated on his talk page that he no longer checks it, and that if you want to tell him something, you should click the e-mail link. So, if you want to tell Jguk about the decision, please e-mail him as described on his talk page. --TML1988 16:05, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] Fair use

My take on this is to list the image on IFD, if the image is not deleted send an email to Jimbo Wales explaining that the image is not being deleted even though it is a coyright violation. I'm pretty certain he'll take action on this issue. - Ta bu shi da yu 21:02, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

John, I've just blocked RJII for 24 hours for violating the 3RR at Anarchism. Does this need listing at Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/RJII_v._Firebug#Documentation_of_bans? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Steve block (talk • contribs) .

    [edit] Matthew 1:2

Hello, last month you merged this article after an AfD debate resulted in 9 merge votes to 8 keep ones. Another user reverted your merger, restoring the article. I'll be the first to admit it was a pretty poor stub, so I then expanded it and tried to turn it into a full article. It is still somewhat short, but much less stubby than it was. -Ril-, however, insists that your original decision is absolute, and has repeatedly restored the redirect, and thus erased all my additions. Could you have a word with him? - SimonP 23:19, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

SimonP is attempting to overturn a clear consensus decision. SimonP has prevented anyone from successfully carrying out the conclusion of that AfD. This pattern of ignoring consensus about such articles by SimonP has in fact resulted in arbitration against SimonP which is ongoing and may be viewed here. In particular I draw your attention to the statement by User:Thryduulf which said "There is already consensus regarding the content, consensus that there is a consensus and consensus that SimonP's actions are against consensus." --Victim of signature fascism | There is no cabal 20:30, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

As you yourself said at the AFD, the result of the debate was "merge and redirect". So merging and redirecting isn't just you doing something randomly, that's you carrying out the consensus of the debate. In addition, I would direct your attention to Wikipedia talk:Centralized discussion/200 verses of matthew which covers this verse, and where the consensus is also to merge. --Victim of signature fascism | There is no cabal 19:14, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] Good Article

Hi, I noticed you removed Noel Gallagher from the good articles nomination thing.

Just wondering why? You didn't leave a reason andI think I adressed all the issues you raised before. Your reason for removing it is pretty important to my improving the article.

I know it might not be up to featured article standard yet, but surely it's good.

    Bloody comprehensive too!

One thing I am interested in is sound clips (I think you mentioned them before). How would I go about including them? Do they have to be licenced coz that's really hard work.

Any comments would be grrrreatly appreciated and I promise I won't call you a chimp.--Crestville 15:23, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Ok, with regards to the pictures, I doubt I can trace the original sources of the current ones. However, I've contacted live4ever.us about using their images. and recieved this reply:
    Dear Joe,
believe the way wikipedia works you don't need a license to link photos .
You can take some photos from live4ever photo galleries since I have agreements to show them on my site with some of the photographers and galleries.
    A tip :
if you know the source of your photo or even better the photoagraphers name just credit them. Most photogrphers are fine with the non commercial usage of their materials.
    good luck
    webmaster L4E
Now, from this I think he's giving me free range to use pictures from this site. How would I go about referencing this? fair use tag? or would I need to show some evidence of the above letter?--Crestville 16:45, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
But surely the e-mail from live4ever.us grants me permission to upload new pictures from that website to replace the old ones who's sources are unclear. Would that be classed as fair use? --Crestville 17:03, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I think I understand - I upload them as fair use, mention that I have permission in the summary section and then they won't get deleted. Right?--Crestville 17:12, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
What would be mine then? Presumably I could use the Katy Holmes one as a guideline - would the same reasons apply?--Crestville 17:19, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] Triumph of the Will

Hello! I see this article you have worked on substantially is currently on the main page, as our featured article of the day. Well done! However, there are some problems with the fair use images on it, especially those used in the gallery (which has been taken down for the moment). The issue is explained in further detail at Wikipedia:Fair use review, but basically the problems are:

    1. The images are high-resolution, which should be avoided (note the fair use message stating: "It is believed that the use of a limited number of web-resolution screenshots" -- which basically means something typical of the web, not something you can use as a wallpaper)
    2. The gallery was blatantly not fair use (a fair use image must be critically discussed, and a gallery with captions is typically considered insufficient for fair use)

I hope we can work together to find a workable solution. For further details, please see Wikipedia:Fair use review. Thanks! :) Johnleemk | Talk 16:53, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

You seem to have already implemented it. :) Seriously, if you want to remove the gallery go right ahead. I'm still learning Fair Use policy, and as you read there is some dispute over whether or not the film is PD. I'm just happy to have made it into a Featured Article and had it on the main page. [edit] List of people in Playboy

I've gotten no response to posting List of people in Playboy 1990-1999 at Wikipedia:Fair use review. This is actually only one of a group of six similar pages, which together have hundreds of images claimed as fair use but without any discussion of the images other than the lists themselves. I'm tempted to pull a Ta bu shi da yu and delete the lot, but I'm not sure I'm prepared to deal with the flak. Do you have any thoughts about how to proceed? Listing all of the images individually at WP:IFD or WP:PUI seems excessive. Thanks, Chick Bowen 02:09, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] Good articles

Hi John - I saw your comment on Talk:Good articles saying that some of your nominations had been rejected and others later delisted. Just wondered which ones? I didn't have time until recently to do much work on the self nominations and fear that some people may be applying inappropriate standards. Very concerned that you said you'd given up on the process and will try and address the concerns you've raised to keep it worthwhile! Thanks for commenting. Worldtraveller 15:28, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] Hi

    Hi

I have just initiated a debate on Notability. While natability is a very subjective process,I feel certain achivements merit automatic notability. My criteria is

    a.Nobel Winners

    b.Pulitzer winners

c.Fellows of American Academy of Arts and Sciences

d.Fellows of American Academy of Arts and Letters

e.Fellows of Royal Swedish Academy of Letters

f.Fellows of Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

    g.Fellows of British Academy

h.Fellows of Royal Society of London

    i.Templeton Prize winners

    j.Members of National Academies

k.Members of Pontificial Academy of Sciences

I initiated this debate once I discovered that one Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences was deleted for not being notable. While there was some confusion there as he unfortunately had the same name as someone with not so savoury antecedants, this was cleared up during the debate and notability factor included. The deletion votes were cast before the name confusion was cleared up but Counted nevertheless.I am sending this missive to all the active administrators and only when I have specific guidance shall I request a reconsideration.Would be appreciative of your views.(Vr 06:55, 10 March 2006 (UTC))

    [edit] Goggle Count

I would like to know how you calculate Google count. You had my page deleted because there was less then 100 google hits for it, but when I go out to Google and type in "Cougar Mountain Software", I get the first ten items out of 699,000 page. Can you let me know what you use because there seems to be some issue there. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dparvin (talkcontribs) .

Well, it's 267,000 if you use quote marks around the query (meaning all the words "Cougar Mountain Software" in that order. But there seems to have had a previous problem. Although there's a high chance it's notable after this review. Submit it to Deletion Review. Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 00:25, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you for being a voice of reason

...considering the stub I started, Cacodemon. Although you claim to be a deletionist, you together with the community saved that little orphan article which could be more useful if adopted by another more important article, merging it. Also thank you for thinking my points were justified. After that article was attacked several times during its first day of life, although it is insignificant, seeing there still are good people (admins) who find that merging an innocent stub is a more constructive action than deletion, feels quite reassuring. It feels good again to be a Wikipedian. --Arny 20:17, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] Places in Atlas Shrugged

Upon further examination, I find that the pages in Cat:Atlas Shrugged are the fragments of an early attempt at a wikibook, kind of Cliff's notes to AS. I now think the solution is to move all of them to wikibooks, and will be so proposing. I will be leaving a note on AfD/Places to the closing admin, requesting that he transwiki if this gets deleted - which looks likely. If you do not close, would you make sure the transwiki to wikibooks:Atlas Shrugged gets done? Septentrionalis 00:44, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Do you mean the nominations, or the transwiki? I thought it took an admin to transwiki. Septentrionalis 05:33, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] Stanley Random Chess

Hi there John, Greetings from Canada. I'm quite new to Wikipedia, so I'm trying to learn how things work! I noticed that with respect to the article I submitted on Stanley Random Chess, it was noted that "The result of the debate was delete." How is the outcome of a debate determined? I'm curious about the process, particularly because another user suggested to me that his take on the debate was that the article would likely stay. I'm eager to learn how the process works. I've already learned a great deal about Wikipedia, and my respect for the process of peer consensus has been enhanced considerably - although I imagine that this process could at times be controversial. A second question I have is whether there is any archive of the article in its final form prior to deletion. I would like to make a copy of its final form, since I had made extensive revisions in an attempt to have make it acceptable. [edit] Trying not to stalk, but I think you should know

On the recent deletion of Pi Kappa Alpha - Gamma Chapter at the College of William & Mary, moved to User:Djrobb/Pi Kappa Alpha - Gamma Chapter at the College of William & Mary - I've got a question to clarify. I proposed in the nomination that we userfy rather than flatly deleting the article so that User:Djrobb could save the content and move it to his own webspace, but not so that it could be preserved with Wiki functionality on our webservers. In other words, after he "saved" it, it would be deleted from userspace as well. I ask because the user's website www.wmpika.org now links to the userspace article instead of the articlespace, with the stated intention that it will stay on our servers. Am I wrong in my interpretation that it needs to be eventually moved off our servers entirely? I haven't mentioned this to the user yet, I didn't want to cause any strife if I was wrong. Thanks! -- stillnotelf is invisible 20:51, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] Smoking

This article [9] has been removed from the main article [10] without any consensus or prior discussion as a complete whitewash and deliberate attempt at placing a favorable light on smoking and the creation of a positive POV or light. Passive smoking was also removed from the article [11] where it has since fallen into garbage. Please can you put 2 merge requests in for me? [edit] Paul Andrews

Hiya, I saw that you were involved with the deletion discussion for the vanity article at Paul Andrews (I) [13]. Though the result was "Delete" on January 23, the page was re-created on February 1st, at Paul Andrews (magician). I've been trying over the last several weeks to encourage the creators to actually add information which verifies the individual's notability, but with little success. In my opinion, the article should still be (re)deleted. Do you concur? How should this take place? Should a second deletion discussion be started, or can the page just be deleted outright? Any advice appreciated, --Elonka 19:42, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] copy of SR Chess article

Hi and thanks for the reply. If you could userfy the article that would be great - I would just like to make a copy of the text and put it on my computer (I didn't get a chance to do that prior to its deletion, I wasn't expecting it to vanish entirely!). For the record, SR Chess isn't played by just 10 players, and I'm not sure that it didn't satisfy the criteria for being "independently verifiable." Can you refer me to an article about verification, so I can learn more about how this is used in Wikipedia, and so be better educated on the subject for the future? I'd like to learn more, and so be better informed for the future! Although I'm disappointed by the outcome with respect to this particular article and think that some misunderstandings may have led to its deletion (my own ignorance about the process, and a poorly written initial version of the article are largely to blame for those misunderstandings I think). But my respect for Wikipedia has been enhanced by the whole experience, and I'm very impressed with the whole project! As a matter of consistency though (and other users in the debate observed this as well), Wikipedia has pages for obscure chess variants like Colour Chess, Multiple Move Chess and Penultima, most of which are less notable and less verifiable than Stanley Random Chess - should we be nominating these for removal too? Several other users did suggest that in the course of discussion. I don't know how that process works, but it would make sense to do that probably - how would one go about that? This would not be done out of spite, but consistency. Thanks again for your assistance John, and kind words, it's appreciated! Gregorytopov 19:51, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] RfA Results and Thanks

Johnleemk/Archive7, thank you for your constructive neutral comments in my recent RfA. Although it did not succeed as no consensus was declared (final: 65/29/7), I know that there is always an opportunity to request adminship again. In the meantime, I will do my best to address your concerns in the hope that when the opportunity for adminship arises once again, you will reconsider your position. If at any time I make any mistakes or if you would like to comment on my contributions to Wikipedia, you are more than welcome to do so. Regardless of your religious, cultural, and personal beliefs, I pray that whatever and whoever motivates you in life continues to guide you on the most righteous path.

[edit] Doom - The Dark Side Of Phobos article.

Pleasant good day to you sir. Allow me to introduce myself-Anthony De Castro but an unregistered Wiki user.

This is in concern with your merging of the 'Darkness Dawning' and 'Doom The Dark Side Of Phobos' article. In the merge of the Darkness article into the Phobos article, you seem to have omitted the original posted lyrics to the song 'Darkness Dawning' that was in the original 'Darkness Dawning' article. Now, due to redirection, you are directed to the DSOP page from it.

Now the users who have this soundtrack from OcRemix have found it hard to search the lyrics for this particular song, since even Google does not display any useful result, much less the original DSOP site where the music is posted.

All I ask is that with your merge, please replace the original lyrics posted to this song or if you can find a link to the words: please provide it for the users.

Your merge of articles was quite accurate, but I thought I'd just bring this little error forward to your attention.

Many thanks and do enjoy your day. Anthony De Castro

    [edit] Roy Gordon Lawrence

Hi, you recently closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Roy Gordon Lawrence (second nomination) as "no consensus". Would it be possible for you to delete the history of the article, to remove some attackish content, which the problem the nominator expressed. The current version has almost nothing of the original, which had copyvio issues, as well as attacks. The edits by User:Williamo1 are where all the problems are, and since his edits aren't substantially reflected in the current version, I think there should be a GFDL-attribution problem, in removing them. --Rob 20:08, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

    [edit] Ketuanan Melayu peer review

I'll give the article a solid once-over as soon as I have time; it looks very substantive and well-thought-out. The form is a bit confusing in one regard -- sometimes italics are used to indicate non-English-language words and phrases; at other times italics indicate quotations. But not all quotations (or non-English-language phrases) are italicized. I'm not sure why it's formatted this way, but it confused me a bit. I'll put my later comments on the peer review page. [edit] fair use

Hello and thanks for taking the time/effort. I have designed my user page in a way it can demonstrate my position, knowledge and in the example of the CSN image, the subjects of my studies!

The imagery is "icon" format only, and it is content which is possible to grasp without special degree (i.e. no special politics).

I believe WIKIPEDIA supports the idea of "same rights for all members". I have seen some examples of "fancy barnsters" and custom imagery, defaming symbols of the former soviet union. These members have even gained administration status.

I believe users should be given some explicit amount (kbyte) of imagery space. this has become common practice on the internet, and is widely used to duplicate i.e. japanese entertainment celebrities (BBS). It is not really a copyright issue, it is just not allowed to reproduce it commercially.

I am using wikipedia for research/education! (physics/electronics topics). Before i can edit in something in these categories, it is helpful to establish some environment. College/University is never single-minded/one-subject only.

I do not use wikipedia for commercial purpose. My own pages about south america/superstition are advert free/non-profit initiatives (geocities website). I do not plan to extend the image display to a multiple of what it is. The "EUROPA" image does not go under "american" "fair use"! It belongs to the inventory of the european union. The TDK image is subject of a japanese company, i do not know if they insist to apply american law. THE CSN image is "fair use", and i do research about south america. The halloween image is my own creation, it is more PD than "fair use".

alex 08:52, 16 April 2006 (UTC) sorry the long writing.

Hello again. I find it interesting that you write "you do not co-operate". A barnster including a symbol of an vanished empire is "free" or "not free", do not mind for others. However i found the message of several ones offensive. At other places i am now publishing video streams (of promotion video clips), but i am definetively not the first one. I can take the risk to get noticed to a "russian" television station...

    - I DO NOT SEE LIMITIONS TOWARDS "FAIR USE" for: -midi image (public image elements) -EUROPA identifier (it is a community like the U.S.A.) -mini disc logo (the manufacturer is not visible, and the logo is all the same for any manufacturer).

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS APPRECIATE/WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO. -CREATIVE COMMONS (IT IS NOT A FAIR USE LICENSE)? -TO PUT IT UNDER GNU LICENSE?

and hope you get back/restore the templates soon. probably me or you are misunderstanding something. alex 12:45, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi John, I just wanted to thank you for the great work you did a few days ago (and probably before) over at redirects for deletion. You were voting keep a lot and I just wanted to re-iterate that is a great idea. As part of the WP:HOT project I create a lot of (seemingly unlikely) redirects because that is how the redirectee is indexed in at least one other major reference work.
