Where does the date of Cheke's appointment as Edward's tutor come from? I've never come across such a specific dating before. Hackloon 20:37, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Quite possibly from the public domain 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica: "On. the 10th of July 1554, he was chosen as tutor to Prince Edward"[1]. Thanks for bringing this to my attention so it can be properly referenced. -Frazzydee|✍ 20:42, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Have edited the statement to bring it in line with the more cautious assesment of the Oxford DNB article, and added a little detail. Hackloon 20:50, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Have changed that BACK to "confirmed" as the evidence of when he began to teach Edward is confused. He may well have had a role earlier, especially given his close relations with Leonard Cox, and his relations with Henry VIII. It's also the word used by the DNB, and I think their caution is well-placed. Hackloon 21:05, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
But these sources must be mistaken because Edward died in 1553, and everything else in the article points to the fact that he was doing other things by 1554. 1544 is a much more logical date, as the Edward VI article itself says that he began his tutoring at the age of 7, and he was nearly 7 in 1544, so I will change it back to 1544. Sorry - I think we may have been arguing at cross-purposes! Completely agree about it being 1544, was just unhappy with the word "chosen", as I think the evidence suggests he may have been teaching Edward early that 7th July, '44. Sorry about the confusion, Hackloon 21:46, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
