Talk:John A. Roebling

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What was his middle name? I see sources saying "Augustus"; here it's listed as "August". Wondering, -- Infrogmation 19:14, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Why was the Brooklyn Bridge removed from the article? That article states that he was involved; if he was, it's a well-known bridge that should be mentioned here. If he wasn't, someone needs to update the Brooklyn Bridge article. Lord Bodak 19:39, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

Re: Infrogmation's question on the middle name-- I get 8600 hits on "John Augustus Roebling" and 675 hits on "John August Roebling". It is possible he used both forms. I am inclined to change the article name to the Augustus form, due to the prevalence-- also, Britanica uses Augustus. Any arguments against the move? -- Mwanner 21:32, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

In German, his name is Johann August Röbling, which is probably the source of the confusion. We should move it, but note that his birth name was Johann Röbling. --Jpbrenna 21:53, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

How many (corresponding) hits with just John Roebling?? What if he never used his full middle name in American only used the initial (as is actually the habt in US). In that case, the heading apparently should not contain the focus of the quarrel: it should be John A. Roebling. Remember the WP rule: the name version the person was best known as. His memorials & foundation certainly speak for the heading John A Roebling. 217.140.193.123 19:41, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

I like that solution, although "John A" gets slightly fewer than "John Augustus" (7210 v. 8560). Plain "John Roebling" gets 8890. With a redirect from other variants to the article name, I don't much care whether it's John Roebling or John A. The problem with "John August" is that it's just wrong (well, basically, in English). The advantage to "John A" is that we can do it ourselves, 'cause "John A" is presently just a redirect. "John Roebling" has a two line edit history, so we'd have to go through Requested Moves.
I had submitted a move request to "John Augustus Roebling", which I have now cancelled. If anyone feels strongly that the article should be "John Roebling" instead of "John A. Roebling", I'll submit a new request. Otherwise, I will do the move to "John A". Mwanner 21:25, August 26, 2005 (UTC)
OK, going once, going twice,... tomorrow I'm moving it to John A. Roebling. Mwanner 02:20, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

He didn't "invent" wire rope - see that article.

[edit] Vandalism

Someone vandalized part of a sentence under "Legacy", I have backtracked through older versions and it is in every version. What is this? Does someone know the correct information to revert this?

  • I fixed it. Someone copied a chunk of the earlier text along with a piece of nonsense. --Tysto 18:27, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Date of birth

Seen on his grave at Find-A-Grave, it says 1800. Lincher 21:54, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
