Johnstownbridge is a GAA club in Kildare, winner of three county senior football championships and Kildare club of the year in 1983. Balyna parish field as a separate club in youth competitions.

Founded in 1942, Johnstownbridge’s first trophy was the Junior B title in 1950.
[edit] Gaelic Football
Johnstownbridge’s run of success in the 1960s culminated in a defeat in the Intermediate final of 1968. They were regraded in 1972, but three years later were back in Intermediate, won the under-21 championship of 1977 with the help of a controversial goal, the Intermediate championship of 1978 and went on to appear in six county finals between 1983 and 1996. Their breakthrough in 1983 was achieved with one of the best beautiful goals seen in Newbridge. Phelim Farrell sent a free after Barry O'Donoghue who played the ball into open space on the right wing, outpaced his marker, and sent a smashing shot in by the far post to put Johnstownbridge two points up with eight minutes to go and they held out to beat Sarsfields by 2-7 to 1-8. The O’Donoghue brothers backboned that team of the 1980s which also won the Leader Cup, the Senior Football League five times out of seven appearances in the final.

Johnstownbridge players hurl with Broadford, where under the guidance of the legendary Teddy Gorman (who in the opinion of the author has probably never even picked up a stick in his life!) they have represented the parish well becoming perhaps the most successful intermediate hurling team in the entire parish of Balyna. Defeating the likes of The MillPond, Cadamstown, Thomastown and Carrick and the dreaded Carbury Borders with ease on a regular basis. However success against other real teams has been far more elusive!

Johnstownbridge 1969-87 founded by Imelda Doran, Sadie Ryan, Maureen Mulligan and Mona O’Brien along with Tom Hassett as team trainer, with a navy gymslip and pale blue blouse as their colours. Between 1969 and 1985 their colours changed to a wine coloured skirt and a pink top. Revived in 1994, the present colours are the Johnstown bridge GAA colours. They won Division 4 Feile na nGael in 2000. The club won the junior league and championship double for the third time in 2003.
