Johns Island, South Carolina

Johns Island is an island just across the Stono River from the city of Charleston, South Carolina. Part of the island has actually been incorporated into the city. The island is home to the Angel Oak, a 1400 year old Southern live oak tree. The population of Johns Island is growing because of its proximity to Charleston. The 2000 census reported a total of 11,477. The other major population center is the town of Seabrook Island, which is not on a separate island, but on a peninsula at the extreme south of Johns Island. The island has a land area of 216.83 km² (83.72 sq mi). Wadmalaw Island lies adjacent to it in a generally southwesterly direction. Johns Island is the second largest island on the east coast.
