Johnny Green (basketball)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John M. "Jumpin' Johnny" Green (born December 8, 1933 in Dayton, Ohio) is a retired American professional basketball player.

A 6'5" power forward/center from Michigan State University, Green spent 14 seasons (19591973) in the NBA, playing for the New York Knicks, Baltimore Bullets, San Diego Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, Cincinnati Royals, and Kansas City-Omaha Kings. He tallied 12,281 points and 9,083 rebounds in his career and appeared in the NBA All-Star Game four times (in 1962, 1963, 1965, and 1971).

Described as a raw talent who never played organized high school basketball, Green made up for a lack of shooting range with tremendous athleticism, which contributed to his rebounding and shot-blocking skills and overall strong inside game. Green is also remarkable for his durability and longevity. Despite his late start in the NBA at age 26, Green played 14 productive seasons (never less than 61 games in any season) before retiring after the 1973 season at age 39.
