John de Lancie (oboist)

John de Lancie (July 26, 1921, Berkeley, CaliforniaMay 17, 2002, Walnut Creek, California) was a U.S. musician who served as the principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra for many years. Richard Strauss wrote his Oboe Concerto at the urging of de Lancie, whom he met during de Lancie's tour of duty as a soldier in Europe at the end of World War II.

John de Lancie commissioned a piece for oboe by the composer Jean Françaix, a piece that translates into English as "The Flower Clock."

At his death at the age of 80, de Lancie was one of the few remaining students of the legendary Marcel Tabuteau of the Curtis Institute of Music. De Lancie also taught at Curtis and served as its director from 1977 to 1985.

His son is the actor John de Lancie.
