John Ward (born 7 April 1951 in Lincoln) is the current manager of English Football League One club Cheltenham Town, having been appointed in 2003.
As a player, Ward spent the bulk of his career as a forward at Lincoln City where he scored more than 100 goals between 1970 and 1979. He also had spells at Watford, Grimsby and Workington.
Following his retirement from playing, Ward was assistant manager to Graham Taylor at Watford from 1982 to 1987. He followed Taylor and was his assistant at Aston Villa between 1987 and 1991. He took up his first managerial post at York City in 1991. His second top job was at Bristol Rovers from 1993 to 1996. After this he was Adrian Heath's assistant at Burnley (1996 to 1997), manager of Bristol City (1997 to 1998) and Dave Jones's assistant at Wolverhampton Wanderers (1998 to 2003).
Ward became manager of Cheltenham Town in November 2003 (following the sacking of Bobby Gould) and led the Robins to two successive mid-table finishes. A dramatic improvement followed in 2006, as he led the club to a playoff final victory over Grimsby Town at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, to secure promotion to League One.
