John Sykes (born July 29, 1959 in Reading, Berkshire), is a British heavy metal/hard rock guitarist who has played with Streetfighter, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Badlands, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Blue Murder, and his solo project John Sykes.

He was in a band called Badlands, with his one time Whitesnake bandmate Neil Murray (not to be confused with the band Badlands featuring guitarist Jake E. Lee).

Sykes's acclaimed playing is on the 1987 Whitesnake self titled album,[citation needed] also known simply as 1987. This was Whitesnake's most successful recording,[citation needed] carrying hit tracks such as "Crying in the Rain", "Still of the Night", "Is This Love?", "Here I Go Again" and "Children of the Night". For the Whitesnake record John Sykes used two Mesa/Boogie Coliseum heads and his favourite Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar.[citation needed]

In 1999, John Sykes's solo song "Cautionary Warning" was used in the anime series Black Heaven. The footage accompanying the song was rotoscoped from one of Sykes' concerts, which was a very striking statement for use in previews. Sykes' involvement in the series was the key feature of Pioneer USA's marketing.[citation needed]

Sykes made a rare guest appearance on keyboardist Derek Sherinian's 2004 solo album "Mythology", playing alongside Zakk Wylde on the track "God Of War".

In 2006, he got his own signature Gibson Les Paul Custom which was modeled after his favourite guitar,[citation needed] and has used it when touring with Thin Lizzy all around the UK and Ireland.[citation needed]
