John Storm (January 3, 1760[1] - December 13, 1835[1]) is most well known for being one of less than 90 dragoons that fought under Colonel William Washington during the Battle of Cowpens in the American Revolutionary War.[2] Dragoons commanded huge power upon the battlefield at the time because of their ability to incite fear within the enemy infantry. "The shock of a cavalry charge often proved decisive in gaining a victory."[3] Had it not been for these handful of dragoons, the Battle of Cowpens, a turning point in the war, could have been an American loss.[2] John Storm was born in Latimore Township, Pennsylvania and died in Greene County, Indiana.[1] He served under Captains Ballard Smith and Thomas Boyer in the 1st Virginia Regiment starting in 1780.[1] Later that year he served under Captain Robert Morrows in Colonel William Washington's Continental Dragoons.[1] He is believed to have fought not only in the Battle of Cowpens, but the Battle of Guildford Court House as well.
