John Sanford (ca. 1605-1654)

John Sanford (ca. 1605-May 1654) was a founder of the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island and a governor of the united towns of Portsmouth and Newport.

Sanford was born in England and migrated to New England in 1631 aboard the Lyon. He moved to Rhode Island with the party that supported Anne Hutchinson and signed the Portsmouth Compact with other founders of the town.
