John Steven McGroarty (1862–1944) was a Democrat United States Congressman from California.

John Steven McGroarty was born in Foster Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on August 20, 1862. He was educated at public schools and Harry Hillman Academy, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
McGroarty was treasurer of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania from 1890-1893. He later studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1894 and commenced practice in Wilkes-Barre. McGroarty then moved to Montana and was employed in an executive position with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte and Anaconda from 1896-1901. Afterwards he moved to Los Angeles, California in 1901 and engaged in journalism. He was elected poet laureate of California by the State legislature in 1933. He is author of numerous books and dramas.
He was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth and Seventy-fifth Congresses (January 3, 1935-January 3, 1939), but was not a candidate for renomination in 1938.
Later McGroarty resumed the profession of journalism in Tujunga, Los Angeles County, California. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for secretary of state of California in 1938.
McGroarty died in Los Angeles, California on August 7, 1944, and is interred at Calvary Cemetery
