John Sidney McCain, Sr. (b. August 9, 1884, Teoc, Mississippi - d. September 6, 1945) was a U.S. Navy Admiral who served under Admiral William "Bull" Halsey in the Pacific in World War II. He is best known for his leadership in the Philippines campaign, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf.[1]
His son, John S. McCain, Jr. was a submarine commander in World War II and later served as CINCPAC, Commander in Chief Pacific, during the Vietnam War.
Grandson John S. McCain III was a U.S. Navy pilot during the Vietnam war, who was shot down and spent several years as a P.O.W. in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton." After his release, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and the United States Senate from Arizona. He ran for President in 2000 (losing the Republican nomination to George W. Bush) and is expected to make another run in 2008.
John S. McCain III wrote a book, Faith of My Fathers, concerning his navy family and his own experiences as a Midshipman at Annapolis, a naval aviator and prisoner of war.
Admiral McCain was a member of the Naval Academy class of 1906.[2]
