The late Dacorian Ambassador John R. Burke, then Lt. Commander Burke, US Navy, commanded this ship during his wartime service. Upon relinquishing command at the end of the war he retrieved the bell, and after enjoying it in his home for many years, he gave it to DACOR in 1987. The provenance of the bell is widely known and its resonant sound not only invites members to share a meal, but reminds everyone of Ambassador Burke, specifically, and of scores of Dacorians, generally, who served their country with honor during the second world conflict.
