John Thomas Newstead, born at Martin-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire on September 8, 1877, and died at Blackburn, Lancashire on March 25, 1952, was a cricketer who played for Yorkshire.
An all-rounder who batted in the middle order and bowled at "above medium pace", Jack Newstead was an exception to the rule that Wisden Cricketers of the Year tend to be chosen for several seasons of continued excellence. He was picked in 1909 for his deeds the previous year, when his 927 runs and 140 wickets were a big factor in regaining the County Championship for Yorkshire.
Newstead had made his debut for Yorkshire in 1903, but then disappeared for several seasons to join the MCC staff. His emergence in 1908 was unexpected, and so was his steep decline thereafter: he was no longer a regular player by the end of the 1909 season and his last appearance was in 1913. He did not play Test cricket.
