John Morgan Cosgrove

John Morgan Cosgrove, MD FACS born in New Jersey in 1957. Parents from Brooklyn and paternal grandparents from Northern Ireland and maternal grandparents from Dublin, Ireland. Was inducted into high school Hall of Fame in 2003 (www.nvnet.org). Educated at Harvard College where he was recipient of John Harvard Scholarship and played four years of intercollegiate football where he set a record up to that time for sacks and unassisted tackles in a game (Bergen Record/North Jersey Media 1996). Matriculated at New York Medical College where he met his future wife Patricia Barry, MD (a 7th generation Staten Islander). Residency in general surgery done in New York City.

Has a busy clinical and academic practice in general and abdominal surgery. Has published original articles in gastrointestinal surgery(pubmed) and edited definitive textbook "Minimally Invasive Surgery:Principles and Outcomes"(HARWOOD ACADEMIC PUBLISHERS 1998 UK). Original surgical member of NY State Health Department NYPORTS patient safety system which is the model for health care safety reporting for the Nation(www.health.state.ny.us) Recognized in 2000 by Fire Department of City of New York(FDNY) as Honorary Medical Officer for care of firefighters.

His major philanthropic involvement includes Chaminade High School, St. Mary's Elementary School and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons(SAGES). Major leadership positions in North Shore Long Island Jewish Health Care System (www.northshorelij.edu), American College of Surgeons(Director) and past governor of SAGES (SAGES.org). Also past president of New York Celtic Medical Society(New York's oldest medical society established 1891).
