John Mellencamp left longtime home Mercury Records in 1997 due to what he felt was their unwillingness to promote him enough to give him a hit single. He then signed with Columbia Records.

John Mellencamp is the first of three albums Mellencamp would record for the label. Unfortunately, the album failed to reach the critical and commercial success of its predecessor, Mr. Happy Go Lucky.
