Detective John McBain is a fictional character on the American daytime drama One Life To Live, portrayed by Michael Easton.

An FBI agent, John came to town in October 2003 and involved Cristian Vega in an undercover operation. After Cristian married fiancee Natalie Buchanan, the couple headed to Las Vegas, where Cristian was killed by Flynn Laurence. John became close to widow Natalie, who initially blamed John for Cris' death, but they eventually fell for each other. His relationship with Natalie thus complicated, John (now working for the Llanview Police Department), found comfort with local attorney Evangeline Williamson and they began to date.

John's estranged younger brother, Dr. Michael McBain was also introduced in 2003. Michael eventually found love with (and married) Marcie Walsh.

In October 2004, Just as John and Natalie's relationship solidified, a man looking exactly like Cristian turned up alive. Amnesiac Cristian, his identity in question, had been programmed in captivity to kill his brother, Antonio Vega; he resisted, but was eventually revealed to be the killer of evil Tico Santi, his maternal cousin, who had wreaked havoc for many of Cristian's loved ones. As memories of his former life began to return, Cristian accepted the consequences of his actions and went to jail. To help Natalie and his family move on, he pretended that he was, in fact, an impostor. John discovered the truth but Cristian swore him to secrecy.

Keeping Cristian's true identity from Natalie was difficult, as his feelings for her continued to linger in spite of his relationship with Evangeline. After Evangeline told him she loved him and he didn't say it back, she dumped him.

Eventually, John moved on to date Natalie, choosing to rescue her first instead of Evangeline when they were both kidnapped by the Music Box Killer in June 2005. He still however felt guilt because he still knew Cristian's identity and didn't tell Natalie. This got even more complicated in the fall of 2005 when Evangeline became Cristian's lawyer in an attempt to get his prison sentence appealed (and discovered that he was indeed Cristian). In November 2005, a prison riot led by Carlo Hesser broke out and John and Cristian were caught in the crossfire. It was also then that Natalie discovered that Cristian was indeed Cristian. Although John and Cristian made it out alive, Natalie was angry for the both of them lying to her and dumped them.

As 2006 began, Natalie realized that she had fallen for John, thus officially divorcing Cristian. John became consumed with solving the decades-old murder of his father, police officer Thomas McBain. The unsolved crime had plagued John for years, but new evidence began to surface, which led to David Vickers, Dr. Paige Miller and ultimately, Dr. Spencer Truman. On the day of Spencer's arrest, John had finally found peace with his dad's death, and had bought an engagement ring for Natalie. Suddenly, John was involved in a terrible car pile-up on the highway — he was killed, his body was burned beyond recognition. The town of Llanview mourned his death in early October 2006 and prayed that ADA Hugh Hughes (also in the accident) would survive. On November 10, 2006 it was revealed that Hugh, badly burned and bandaged in the hospital, was in fact John McBain.
