John Mackovic

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Mackovic is a former American football head coach. Mackovic served as the head coach in college football for Wake Forest University (1978-1980), the University of Illinois (1988-1991), the University of Texas (1992-1998), and the University of Arizona (2001-2003). Mackovic was the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League from 1983 to 1986.

Mackovic was an innovator of the passing game. He knew how to stretch and flood zone pass coverage in the late 70's typical defenses and this produced great success by playing smart passing football. Unfortunately, his inability to get along with people was not tolerated for long even when he won. A brilliant tactician, driven, he was unfortunately not a natural leader.

He once suggested that his players "treat" their opponents' "helmets like urinals." He frequently called his players "ladies" and once referred to his placekicker as a "sissy boy." Though John never physically assaulted his players, many frequently cowered naked in the shower stalls until he left the locker room.
